rzlbd is not just a “play with identity” or a “miniature version” of a name; it is representative of a design philosophy. Founded by Reza Aliabadi in Toronto in 2006, atelier rzlbd is not an ordinary architecture practice; rather it is an everyday engagement with design, constantly exploring alternatives for conventional solutions and understandings of arrangements. Basing the foundations of this practice as a contribution and not a service, rzlbd emerges as an innovative mind seeking opportunities for design everywhere. Although the main concern of the atelier is Architectural, its work ranges from conceptual ideas to product design and the publication of the rzlbd POST. Designing affordable and modern single-family houses is one of the main focuses.

After its early explorations and careful attentions to details and materials, rzlbd continued its works by reevaluating familiarities, introducing metaphors and sharing ideas while respecting simplicity of design. The journey is through manipulating spatial experiences with means of natural lighting and avant-garde perspectives. While the attention to tectonics is still an important factor, recently, the aesthetic concerns have been more focused on the negative spaces and voids, introducing exciting spatial experiments. rzlbd is a boutique practice that adapts itself according to the needs of the project. rzlbd makes changes rather than additions. Whether it is “a house with all the right angles” or an idea worth sharing, rzlbd is interested in alternating everyday settings; re-designing experiences, objects, styles, and thoughts that are so familiar to us that we dare not to revisit them.

In 1999, he graduated from University of Tehran with a Master’s degree in Architecture, and founded the “Reza Aliabadi Building Workshop”. After completing a post-professional Master’s of Architecture at McGill University, in 2006, the workshop was re-established as atelier Reza Aliabadi “rzlbd”. In the intervening years he completed a considerable number of projects including residential, commercial, institutional, retail and R&D buildings many of which were awarded significant honors and were published. He also had a teaching position at the School of Fine Arts at the University of Tehran and was a guest lecturer in the PhD Program at the same university. He maintains an ongoing interest in architectural research in areas such as microarchitecture, housing ideas for the future and other dimensions of urbanism such as compactness and intensification. He splits his time completing architectural projects and publishing the rzlbd POST.
